Paired Recovery Stretching Class - February 24, 2011

LEARN HOW TO MINIMIZE INJURIES WITH PAIRED STRETCHING...

Class length: 2 hours
Fee: $30 per person
Instructor: Lyn Yancha, LMP
Location: 15 S Grady Way (Lower Level), Renton, WA 98057
Date: February 24, 2011
Time: 6:30pm - 8:30pm

This is a 2-hour class to teach folks passive stretching with a partner (sister, friend, significant other, brother, mom, dad, etc). This class would greatly benefit those who are limited in range-of-motion, athletic, or just enjoy stretching. =]

The class is based on Thai massage techniques plus a combination of other modalities that I have used on my clients, who are runners, cyclists, desk jockeys, or weekend warriors.... I believe in giving "tools" to clients/friends/family to empower themselves with their healing and recovery.

The space will probably limit me to 14-16 people. If more are really interested in attending, another date will be added with the same time frame. Also, if you or your partner have any condition that would limit you from participating fully (i.e. diabetic, arthritic, post-op, acute injuries), please let me (Lyn) know.

RSVP by logging onto Facebook and visiting http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=127580960633302 or calling our office at (425) 228-5217.

*** We will be on the floor, so please wear loose, comfortable clothing, bring a towel and a pillow (optional). Best to bring a friend to partner with, or you will end up being partnered with someone who ends up coming alone. Please indicate on the RSVP if you are bringing a guest. Thank you. ***

Interactions Between Massage Therapists and Clients Could Affect Pain Sensitivity

Massage therapists are known to be generally warm and personable—and new research shows this could impact a massage client's pain sensitivity.

The nature of a social interaction—whether warm or indifferent—has the ability to influence an individual's sensitivity to physical pain, according to the study results.

The University of Toronto researchers who conducted the study believe the discovery could have significant clinical implications for health professional-client relationships and individuals' general well being.

We welcome your auto, work and L&I claims. We provide on-site chair/seated massages within the Seattle and Portland metro areas. We also provide sports massage at large events. Call us at (425)228-5217

Online Interview Q&A

Question: How long have you been in business?
Answer: Been in business since 1999. So we're at our 11th year and still going strong.

Question: What is your primary product or service?
Answer: Therapeutic massage and bodywork, basically, manual therapy. We treat auto, work, and sports related injuries as well as stress relief, relaxation and office chair massage.

Question: How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Answer: I came about this profession literally by accident, but more specifically, my mom's two car accidents. She had me massage her for 20 minutes almost every day for several weeks. Then I found out that I enjoyed giving massages to friends enough for a couple of them to hint that I should do this for a living. And here I am as a licensed massage practitioner in Renton, WA.

Question: How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Answer: I (Lyn) pretty much make sure I go through my continuing education more than what's required to keep up my massage license. Since graduating from Renton Technical College's Massage Therapy Program in 1999, I've accumulated more than 250 hours of continuing education units (CEUs), learning Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) techniques, Myofascial Release (MFR), Traditional Thai Massage, and other modalities. My colleagues at Century Massage & Bodywork want our clients and patients to know that we use different modalities to get the best result at each session. We want them to know that when you get quality-hour sessions combined with pro-active participation of our clients towards their recovery the result is less visits and more living pain-free.

Question: How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Answer: Currently, we only have our downtown Renton office location. I am looking into expanding to my homestate of Alaska, specifically in Anchorage. Unfortunately, massage therapists are not state licensed, so we won't be able to provide the types of service we have in WA such as medical massage and to be able to bill our clients' insurance. I am hopeful that statewide regulations for massage therapists and to be able to have a state massage license will happen within 2-3 years. I am hopeful.

Question: Provide detailed directions to your location
Answer: The Renton clinic is on Grady Way between the former AMC theaters and Holiday Inn located in downtown Renton, WA. We're in the lower level of the Evergreen Building and just right off the WA-167 / I-405 interchange. During my Anchorage (Alaska) visits, I've been setting up a small "guest" practice with Spirit Path Acunpuncture in midtown Anchorage. Their address is 700 W 41st Ave, Suite 101 (corner of 41st Ave and Arctice Blvd). My next visit there is March/April 2011 and will be holding an intro class on 'Paired Recovery Stretching' April 12 & 13.

Question: What type of payments do you accept?
Answer: We accept cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.

Question: Which areas do you service?
Answer: We are able to do outcalls in the King County area, though most of our clients do come to our facility for medical massages. As far as Century Sports Massage Team is concerned, we are able to provide sports massage in Washington, Oregon, and California. Our sports massage team is hoping to expand to nearby states such as Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Alaska and possibly Utah during multi-day cycling events and tours.

Question: Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Answer: Pretty much mostly me, Lyn Yancha. I am both the owner and the massage therapist of the business Century Massage & Bodywork, Inc d.b.a. Century Sports Massage Team and wear many hats in the business from doing massages to billing and marketing. I do have two other therapists working in the same office location in Renton with me, Anna Marie Mazzone and Robert "Bob" Winbauer, who assist me with some daily operations such as scheduling & massaging clients, marketing, and reception duties. Both are outstanding massage therapists and also graduates of the same school I went to, Renton Technical College.

Question: What are your hours of operation?
Answer: We are available by appointment only Monday through Saturday. When it comes to sports massage events, we are usually available to the athletes on a multiday event from 12 noon to 10PM on an appointment or first-come-first-serve basis. Our annual events are: Courage Classic, Pfizer's People's Coast Classic, California Coast Classic, Ride Around Puget Sound (RAPSody), Seattle to Portland (STP), and High Pass Challenge.

Recovering from an injury? Use MICE instead of RICE

Use MICE rather than RICE:

Health professionals frequently promote RICE as one way of treating an injury: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. But health professionals are now promoting MICE. "Move it". This is because immobilizing a muscle can lead to decreased blood flow and muscle atrophy. If you stretch properly while recovering from an injury, you can speed that recovery.

Bad Weather Driving: Car Accident

Be safe out there!

We at Century Massage & Bodywork, Inc. have dealt with many auto accident clients/patients in the past 10+ years in business, and we want all of our clients to stay healthy and accident-free during our usual months of bad weather here in the Pacific NW, which usually starts in October up to March.

Here are some tips to keep in mind while driving in bad weather:

  • Prepare Ahead of Time - When you drive in bad weather it usually takes longer and can be stressful. Leaving earlier can allow you to reach your destination without worry of running late. If possible, take an alternate route to avoid weather systems that can affect your driving.
  • Drive Slowly - You should drive more slowly and carefully than normal while driving in bad weather. This can reduce the possibility of accidents from skidding.
  • Don’t Tailgate - When you are driving in rain, snow, sleet etc. it is recommended by experts to double the amount of space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Brake time is much slower in these types of conditions, and you have to allow for more room, in case you must suddenly have to stop.
  • Be Sure Your Equipment Works - It is crucial that your tires and brakes are checked on a regular basis during the winter months. In addition, having working windshield wipers can make a significant difference in your visibility during heavy rainfall. Keep your headlights clean from dirt and clear your mirrors and windshields of frost and ice before driving on the road.
  • Use Your Low Beams in Fog - Using your headlights on low not only helps your vision, but also can allow for other drivers to see your car through the fog. Staying near the right side of the road can help avoid incoming traffic from the center line.
  • Listen To The Radio - Listening to your local radio station may offer information on road conditions ahead. It is important to stay focused on the road, so keep the volume on low so it does not affect your concentration while driving in bad weather.
  • Buckle Your Seat Belt – Wearing your seatbelt is not only a Law, but it can greatly help in saving lives, especially in bad weather. It is also important that your passengers wear their seatbelts.
  • It’s Wise to Pull Over - Pulling over to a safe spot completely off the road is a very smart thing to do when you need to rest and especially when weather conditions make your visibility almost zero. If the weather involves snow or heavy rain conditions, be sure that you are not pulling into a deep snow bank or puddle.

It is very important to follow these safe driving techniques in weather conditions that can cause injury to yourself and others. It is even more crucial to perform these safety measures in extreme weather conditions such as tornados, torrential rain, snowstorms, electrical storms and hurricanes. If feasible, the best option would be to reschedule a trip and stay indoors rather than be on the road where you are potentially at serious risk. Using caution when behind the wheel of bad weather is your best defense.

If you are involved in an auto accident please visit your doctor to document your injuries and help you get the treatment that you need to get better. Make sure you ask your doctor for a referral for Massage Therapy for any soft-tissue damage that you sustain during the motor-vehicle accident.

Be well.

Repetitive Stress Injuries

Beware of Repetitive Strain Injuries

Beware of Repetitive Strain Injuries, MASSAGE MagazineYou may think an injury couldn't possibly happen to you. That's what I thought, too. I kept my body healthy and strong. I iced my arms when I performed more than three hours of massage a day. I did yoga every morning, consumed nutritious foods and received eight hours of sleep every night. What went wrong? I had a predisposing factor I was not aware of in my spine, and I was performing unnatural and repetitive motions with my feet and ankles.

A repetitive strain injury happens from repetition and overuse of a certain body part and is cumulative. The most important factor in preventing this type of an injury from becoming chronic is to notice the first warning signs, get treatment and rest the area. Warning signs can be subtle, but if you take notice and get treatment, you can prevent further damage.

Massage therapists think of themselves as caregivers and do not focus on the physical strain their body goes through while they perform their work. Self-care is done on one’s “free-time” when it should be considered something that must be done to prepare and heal the body from physical activity. Injuries do happen. Realize how physical your job is and have body maintenance steps in place before an injury occurs. If an injury happens, take the time to heal completely, so you can enjoy this career for many years to come.

Warning signs for a repetitive strain injury include:

• Stiffness

• Weakness

• Fatigue

• Difficulty using body part

• Waking up with pain

• Tingling, numbness and burning

• Recurring pain

• Lack of endurance

• Feeling of heaviness in body part

Auto or work injury? Massage can help!

A car or work accident can have a devastating effect on your life and the after affects are not only financially devastating, but physically as well. This is often times why it is very necessary to seek the attention of a medical massage specialist shortly after an accident. The longer you delay treatment, the harder it may be to get back to normal. A medical massage therapist will help speed your healing process. All you need is to have your primary care provider refer massage therapy for you.

Massage therapy

Massage therapy is not a mere relaxation tool, it can in fact, clear up the lymphatic system to get rid of toxins that are stored in the body after a trauma. These stored toxins can wreak havoc, decreasing the ability to heal. A great massage opens up the blood circulation and allows the lymphatic system to release a clear fluid that cleans out the tissues of the body.

Although you can come to the rehabilitation center for a therapy session, many medical massage therapist will bring their massage therapy supplies to your home if you are having a difficult time or unable to getting around due to your injuries, though most are able to visit our office in downtown Renton.

Any accident can leave you feeling as if you are lost in limbo, but no matter what your personal injury is, a medical massage therapist can help you regain some semblance of the life you once lead.

At Century Massage & Bodywork, we work closely with and have no problem referring you to naturopaths, chiropractors and physical therapists in order to assist and enable all our auto or work injury clients to recover fully in a short amount of time! We've been in business for over 11 years in the Renton area!
